Facial Acupuncture
It was several years ago that I had my first patient come into the community clinic and asked me to reduce her fine lines and wrinkles on a weekly basis. Not well-equipped with the proper needles or technical instruction in our Master’s Program curriculum (although workshops were available), I did the best I could and promised myself to take a course eventually. I knew that there would be a demand if I was to work with a dermatologist that didn’t use Botox. Now I am more than excited to travel to Albuquerque, NM this April for the 2010 AAAOM Expo to learn Miso Facial Rejuvenation from Jeong-Hwa Song, OMD. Licensed in 1983, she is a leader of the field as well as president of the only Korean society specializing in facial rejuvenation and facial lifting through acupuncture (Korean Facial Rejuvenation Association). Several of my patients have inquired about changing their facial contour, and here is a brief explanation from the Attendee Invitation about how it may work for you:
“It can efficiently regulate, promote the movement of qi and blood, and stimulate the facial muscles and related meridian systems. Also it can lift the facial muscles, remove wrinkles, and balance the face shape. It is a safer and less expensive modality than plastic surgery, without side effects. After Miso facial acupuncture, fine lines may be entirely eliminated and deeper wrinkles diminished. Bags under the eyes can be reduced, jowls firmed, puffiness eliminated, droopy eyelids lifted and double chins minimized. The secondary benefits include reduction of TMJ pain, decongestion of sinuses, and reduction of chronic Bell’s palsy—and it benefits the eyes, ears, and brain.”
One of my recent patients asked me about the bags under his eyes, unable to find answers from his previous physicians. I explained that each organ system can be represented on the face, and the area underneath his eyes correspond with the Kidneys. This is not to generalize that everyone with dark circles experiences a weakness in the Kidneys, for example blood stagnation could be present, but there were several other supporting symptoms, mainly his chief complaint of chronic low back pain and a deficient Kidney pulse. Here is an Acupuncture.com article explaining the reasons for dark under-eye circles and how you can reverse/prevent their progression. It may be news to you, but the NY Times wrote an article in 2007 highlighting the chemical-free cosmetic treatment. Washingtonian.com also has an article about the author’s results after one treatment.
